Vladimir Putin is back on the market fresh off his divorce, but now it looks like New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft has some beef with him too.
Kraft was honored at Carnegie Hall’s Medal of Excellence gala at the Waldorf-Astoria last Thursday when he told the audience that Putin took his Super Bowl XXXIX ring after a 2005 visit to St. Petersburg. “I took out the ring and showed it to [Putin], and he put it on and he goes, ‘I can kill someone in this ring,’” Kraft told the crowd. “I put my hand out and he put it in his pocket, and three KGB guys got around him and walked out.”
After the incident in 2005, Kraft issued a statement saying that the ring was a gift to Putin, but now he’s saying that the only reason he did this was because of a special request from the Bush White House. It seems that the Bush administration wanted to avoid an uncomfortable situation.
Putin’s office has denied that such an incident occurred. Putin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said he himself say Mr. Kraft give the ring to Putin as a present. Putin’s office has also offered to buy Kraft a different ring of equal value.
Looks like Putin forgot the most important playground rule, he who denied it supplied it. Who knows, maybe Obama can help get it back at the G-8 Summit this week?
